I bought this ice chest because I take rafting trips where I put the raft in the river and then take it out a week later. I take off road trips in my Jeep where I may be in the boonies for 4 or 5 days. I have a brand X ice chest that if I am really careful will keep my food for 3 days. After that is canned food and warm soda. But, it was a leap for me to spend this kind of money on an ice chest. I took the leap. I then left for a 4 day trip around the eastern Oregon desert. Friday morning I put one 12 pound bag of ice in the Yeti. I then put in a 6 pack of soda, 4 small bottles of juice, eggs, hash browns, bacon, lunch meat, cheese, condiments.. you get the idea. I did not pre cool the food or the ice chest. The soda an juice were bought off the shelf, not from the cooler. I wanted to pretty much give the Yeti a good reason to fail. I figured if the Yeti ran out of ice, I would divert to a town and take care of it. I took no special care about how many times I opened it. It probably was opened 6 times a day to get stuff out and put stuff back. The following Tuesday I arrived back home and the Yeti was still keeping everything cold. Not cool, cold. I removed the ice and weighed it. 6.3 pounds left of the original 12 pounds. To those who gave this chest a bad review for not keep ice, I have to ask, did you close the lid? I mean I canโt figure it out.To those who gave this chest a bad review for being heavy I have to ask, did you not read the specs? How do you order something that says it weighs 10 pounds and then complain when it shows up and low and behold, it weighs 10 pounds? And guess what? If you put 12 pounds of ice and 20 pounds of food in it, it now weighs 42 pounds. The ice/food/drinks will always be the lionโs share of the weight, not the ice chest. It is well made. You will have to tighten the drain plug to keep it from leaking as it is not one of those cheap push caps, but it made so little water that I never had to drain it. Besides, 12 pounds of ice is about 1 1/2 gallons of water. The less than 6 pounds that melted is less than 3/4 of a gallon. Not enough to flood anything, much less a car.If all you want is something to keep t your stuff cool for an afternoon, I can see why you might be upset by the price or weight. If you need an ice chest to keep your food fresh for a week and the alternative is canned beans and hot soda, this the one for you. This thing works. It does what the manufacturer says it does. Buy it with confidence.

The first thing to note is that YETI marketing is misleading. So the number in the product name DOES NOT indicate actual capacity. For example, I have the YETI 45 and it does not hold 45L. It’s less. But I’m guessing this is due to the space needed to make this a bad a** cooler that can keep ice for days. If you’re new to YETI, a first time buyer, you may be at a dilemma on which size to get. You can’t look at outside dimensions and compare it to a non-YETI cooler that you may be using and say it’s the same. Because it’s probably not in terms of capacity. At the same time, the physical dimension of the YETI is still something to consider if you have space constraints and are looking for a drop in, same size replacement. For me, I was attempting to replace an igloo MaxCool and I had a space constraint to work with. I was “hoping” to get the mighty YETI cooling power AND have the same capacity/footprint as my Igloo. But that’s not possible. I was deciding between the YETI 35, 45, Haul, and 65. The sizing for YETI seems intentionally offset to other brands so I felt the size I needed was in between the 45 and 65, ex. if they had a 55 that would have been perfect. The 35 is essentially a drink only cooler for day trips like the traditional old school hand carry igloos. It’s small. The Haul is actually larger than the 65, I think, which is HUGE. The 65 would have been the one I should have went with for capacity but it wouldn’t meet the footprint I needed to meet. So I went with the 45. When it showed up it was a bit disappointing as it’s more of a bigger cooler for mainly drinks like beach parties or maybe day trip. I was hoping to use it for multi-day camping trips for food and drinks. HAHAH… dreaming. There isn’t a whole lot of space and I’m guessing best case it’s enough for a 2-day camping trip for a family of 4. Maybe for 1 person you can do drinks/food for multi-day camping. But again I think it’s more for drinks. It does come with a YETI basket, which is nice but something I’m likely not going to use. Space is too much of a premium to use a basket. All of this was made up for by the amazing cold retention of the cooler. We had ice for days (3+ days) and food cold with some drinks. I ended up using both my igloo for drinks and the YETI for food for camping. It worked out very well. The 45 is heavy but not too heavy for a strong person to carry, even fully loaded. I do think if I got the 65 and it was fully loaded, there’s no way one person can carry it. My igloo comes with wheels but the YETI didn’t. This was one reason why I was considering the YETI HAUL. Wheels are nice when you need to transport or move from the parking space to where you need to go. I did find out that you can buy 3rd party, after market wheels for the YETI 45. They are expensive but may be worth it.Overall, it’s a YETI and it delivered on what it’s known for. Just realize you’re getting less in capacity for the same physical size.

Great insulation factor and very sturdy. Love the shape and build quality of these. Shipping was quick and arrived in the factory Yeti brown box.The Tundra 45 is a heavier cooler, especially when full, so it can be cumbersome to move with one person. I have read about some people having issues with the darker colored Yeti cooler lids warping if left out in the hot sun too long. I am not sure if this is still an issue, but that is one of the reasons I chose a lighter color when I purchased this.Shopping tipโฆ If you need to have of of the discontinued colors (orange), youโre going to be paying near $800, as these have become collectible. If you donโt need to have one of the retired colors, you can find the Tundra 45 on Yetiโs site for $325 in all the current colors, typically with free shipping and returns. If you feel like searching, you can find holiday deals from other camping and sporting good websites for an additional 10-25% off Yeti pricing.

I followed the recommendation and “pre-iced” it, then put in the freezer packs and ice layer, loaded it with stuff, then ice over the top. The “stuff” was gone, but I let it sit out in the sun and heat for a few days. It still had plenty of ice left. It is well made so I am looking forward to years of service.

Itโs not made in the USAโฆ For that price, it should be.
