As I was hanging there with my fingertips on the smallest of cracks in the wall, my feet were slipping, I clenched my teeth let out a grunting rawer, and dove for the adjacent ledge. As I glided through the air on my way to the ledge, a shimmer of blue metallic light caught my eye on my harness. My Black Diamond Big Air XP shining bright and reflecting this beautiful blue aura of light off of it’s gorgeous blue anodized finish. I realized I had purchased a truly majestic piece of climbing equipment rivaled by no other. looking back up I realized I had overshot the ledge by a few inches, corrected my grip, and proceeded to fall off the face of the wall and into an uncontrolled free fall. Everything’s cool… I was about three feet up on the beginner wall because I suck at climbing.. I’ve not even used this yet because I’m still on the beginner auto-belay walls. They wont let me top rope yet… but this things pretty nice and it’s a cool color of blue. Thanks again!

I got this because I’d been having to borrow my friend’s every time it was her turn to climb. This is the same one she has, except the newer version. Also, way prettier (hers is just plain silver). The blue is just gorgeous in person, and this one has a nice texturing to it. My favorite part of this belay device is how much friction there is against the rope. I honestly feel like you would have to be trying to drop someone. It makes me feel secure when belaying – I’m finally able to relax and stop white-knuckling it so my hands actually have recovery time in between climbs. The carabiner is high quality and easy to maneuver as well as the belay device. This is a great combo for a great price (my friend has pro-deals and tried to find something for me for a better price but couldn’t). Go for it, you’ll be pleased.

I got the XP as me and my girlfriend are newer to climbing, we grew up with the birthday parties and random times going, but we wanted to start going a lot more. Since we are basically self taught, I wanted the extra protection when getting belayed, this thing snags on the rope really hard, which is a good thing, it takes a few belays to get used to the speed, but it can snag really good on the extra teeth and i feel coompletely comfortable in a brand new newbies hands. Get it if your new to the sport for sure.

I bought this exact package 3 years ago during a Sport Chalet closeout sale and learned to belay with it. Absoletuly loved this ATC! Was easy to use, great color and never failed during my indoor or outdoor toprope/sport climbing. The paint started to show some minor wear as the years went on but I never felt the integrity of the device was every put into question.Sadly my gear got stolen, and so did this ATC. Fortunately was able to find it here on ATC and bought it immediately. No issues with my second device and feels nice to have fresh breaking teeth for it!

I have not climbed with these yet, but they look really good and sturdy. I’m looking forward to seeing how the high-friction mode of the ATC compares to the regular ATC that I’m used to.The carabiner I received had a visible defect on the nose, so I submitted a warranty claim with Black Diamond and they quickly sent a replacement. Great customer service and a company you can trust! The replacement they sent was actually a Black Diamond RockLock Screwgate carabiner, and I like it much more than the one that came in this combo. The original carabiner only needed about 1.5 turns of the screw to open the gate — a bit too small for my peace of mind. The RockLock needs about 3 full turns to open the gate, which feels much more secure to me.So I would actually recommend you get the Black Diamond ATC-XP and RockLock Screwgate carabiner separately, rather than this combo. Either way, Black Diamond makes good gear and I highly recommend.

If you’re buying this you probably know what you’re doing. If you’re someone whose on the fence about spending more for a” brand name” for outdoors equipment. This is something you will only skimp on once. Don’t make that mistake, not that unbranded can’t be trusted but most of the professional climbing gear is actually Certified for safety whereas the knock offs are likely never checked. Anyways, assumptions aside on other products, get this. You won’t be disappointed

No doubt a very high quality product, just a little disappointed to open the package to find the carabiner missing, luckily amazon is sending a new one for free
